Welcome/ Bienvenidos

How I got started

I've created this Web site so that any family member may look up and find their family connections.  My name is Octavio J.de los Cobos (Toby).  I was born in 1930 in California, raised and educated here.

My Dad's oldest sister had a family record with over 600 names that started with my Great Grandparents Joaquín (born in 1817) and Bárbara Domínguez (married in 1841) and all their descendants; they had 16 children (some died as infants), my Grandfather, Enrique, was the youngest of these and he was the only one that came to the U.S.A. with his family in 1913, the rest of the family remained in Mexico at that time. More on Enrique in Family History page.

All this history encouraged me to further research the family history.  I have found/obtained copies of handwritten marriage documents of our ancestors starting with my Great Grandparents through my 3rd Great Grandparents; included in this last document are the names of my 4th Great Grandparents.  All of these documents list the names of the parents of the bride and groom so there is positive connection between these Great Grandparents.

Acknowledgments

In my research, the Family Search Web site has helped me tremendously
in finding out about "Older" generations of family members.  I have
submitted over 800 family names to this site and they have published
it on one of their "Pedigree Resource Files" CD Disc 45, which may be
purchased from them.  I have also submitted, and they've published, the
Genealogy of Francisco de los Cobos which I found in the book titled
"Francisco de los Cobos, Secretary to Emperor Charles V" written by
Hayward Keniston and published by the Pittsburgh Press.  One of Francisco's portraits is on display at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, CA and can be viewed on the Museum Web site.  Another portrait of him used to be on display, and is now in storage, at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.

My life Bio.

LIFE: I was born in Calexico, CA in 1930. I went all through school in Calexico starting with the "Sister's School" then Rockwood for my 6th-8th grades, and on to High School; we left after my Junior year.

We moved to San Diego (S.D.) in 1947 where I graduated from S.D. High School, in 1948; one year of Junior College and one year of work then joined the USAF for 4 years, '51-'55.  Got married and had 2 sons and a daughter. Went back to San Diego and worked for Ryan Aeronautical, while working there I went back to school, first at SDJC and then to SDSC majoring in Physics (Applied Eelectronics),  received my B.S. from SDSC in June 1963 when President Kennedy gave the commencement address. I was too busy working, raising a family, and going to school that I didn't have time for social activities.

Worked for Ryan for a total of 9 years. While at Ryan, one of the projects that I worked on was the 1st all jet Vertical takeoff X-13 that's still on display at Museums; also worked in the Standards Lab, which is where we repaired and calibrated all kinds of test equipment. I quit to go to work for General Dynamics/Electronics and shortly after that to the Missile Division in Pomona, which is in the Los Angeles area, working on the Mauler and Standard Missile Programs where I retired 23 years later having worked mostly on the Standard Missile (SM) Program. Every Naval task force out at sea includes an Aegis Cruiser which has SM as one of it's main weapon systems.

Retired from General Dynamics/Pomona in 1986. Lived in house (below at bottom) in LaVerne from 1966 to 1986. Went traveling till 1989 and by then I had gone through a divorce after 36 years of marriage. I then returned to work for the Dept. of the Navy in 1990 as a Civil Servant for five more years at Port Hueneme, Pomona, and Tucson, AZ. doing pretty much as what I had done at GD/Pomona Div. The last 6 months in Tucson, AZ. I retired for the 2nd time in 1995. Bought a new house in Apple Valley, CA, lived here for 14 years (photo below) and in 2009 moved to Murrieta, CA., which is about 35 miles north of Escondido. I have been in a committed relationship since 1993, photos of us are shown below along with others. I am now a golf "hacker." My oldest son lived nearby (died in 2008 of cancer), my other son lives in the L.A. area, and my daughter has lived in Utah since '74. Each of my kids has a boy and a girl; one of my granddaughters has two daughters, and her brother recently had a daughter making me a Great grandfather for the 3rd time.

More on my BIO may be found on the Classmates Web site in the San Diego High School Class of '48 along with photos by going to the Album Tab.

TRAVELS: Have been to 49 states, (not Alaska), Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexican border towns, and 10 European countries. One trip, pullimg a trailer, took 14 months going from So.Cal to Maine and back.

MILITARY: Spent my 1st 25 days at Lackland AFB in tents in Jan 1951 then on to Biloxi, MI at Keesler AFB for electronics school for six months, then on to set school (B-36 Turret Systems) in Denver, CO. at Lowry AFB and finally to Fairchild AFB by Spokane, WA. in Dec 1951. Worked at the 3rd shop for the B-36 Turrets. This is where the flight line technicians (or ther dock) would bring the individual compoment that they thought was causing a problem. We would either give it a clean bill of health or confirm the problem, if this was the case, we would then perform the necessary repairs. We had assembled a system mock-up with parts from a salvaged system off a B-36 that had crashed prior to me being assigned there; we had to fabricate all of the electrical wiring harnesses to special dimentions. Worked for Sergeants Sisson and Tiger there from 1952-1955. We worked on 7 of the systems; the other half of our shop was for the 8th system, the tail system, which was Radar controlled. Ironically, I had initially been assigned out in the flight line and I had missed a roll call , so for punishment, I was sent to the newly created 3rd shop for a month to work at what I had been trained to do at the schools in Biloxi and Denver; at the end of this period, Sgt. Tiger asked me if I would like to be transferred there permanently, that he thought I was a hard worker - so I volunteered and spent 3 years there, working at what was supposed to have been punishment - to work as I was trained.

VIAJES: He ido a 49 estados (no Alaska), Canadá, Puerto Rico, pueblos fronterizos mexicanos, y 10 países europeos.
